Vip3C, a novel class of vegetative insectidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis
2012
Three vip3 genes were identified in two Bacillus thuringiensis Spanish collections. Sequence analysis revealed a novel Vip3 protein class (Vip3C). Preliminary bioassays of larvae from 10 different lepidopteran species indicated that Vip3Ca3 caused more than 70% mortality in four species after 10 days at 4 οg/cm 2. © 2012, American Society for Microbiology.
Current situation and historical evolution of the study and research of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) in Spain. A tale of bleeding bites
2019
The black flies are nematocerous dipterans belonging to the Simuliidae family. This group of insects has become highly relevant in certain regions of the country since 1995. These insects, considered typical in natural lotic environments of clean fresh water, have colonized water channels of very different dimensions. They are currently present in most of the water courses around the country, as demonstrated in the Valencian Autonomous Region, where they can be found in headwaters, middle stretches and river mouths, as well as in irrigation systems with greater or lesser water permanence, such as irrigation reservoirs, channels and ditches. Since 2017 different regions of the country have i…
First report of Antigastra catalaunalis on sesame in Greece.
2017
Specific binding of radiolabeled Cry1Fa insecticidal protein from Bacillus thuringiensis to midgut sites in lepidopteran species
2012
ABSTRACT Cry1Fa insecticidal protein was successfully radiolabeled with 125 I-Na. Specific binding to brush border membrane vesicles was shown for the lepidopteran species Ostrinia nubilalis , Spodoptera frugiperda , Spodoptera exigua , Helicoverpa armigera , Heliothis virescens , and Plutella xylostella . Homologous competition assays were performed to obtain equilibrium binding parameters ( K d [dissociation constant] and R t [concentration of binding sites]) for these six insect species.

Shared midgut binding sites for Cry1A.105, Cry1Aa, Cry1Ab, Cry1Ac and Cry1Fa proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis in two important corn pests, Ostrin…
2013
First generation of insect-protected transgenic corn (Bt-corn) was based on the expression of Cry1Ab or Cry1Fa proteins. Currently, the trend is the combination of two or more genes expressing proteins that bind to different targets. In addition to broadening the spectrum of action, this strategy helps to delay the evolution of resistance in exposed insect populations. One of such examples is the combination of Cry1A.105 with Cry1Fa and Cry2Ab to control O. nubilalis and S. frugiperda. Cry1A.105 is a chimeric protein with domains I and II and the C-terminal half of the protein from Cry1Ac, and domain III almost identical to Cry1Fa. The aim of the present study was to determine whether the c…
Black fly immature stages control efficacy (Diptera: Simuliidae) by means of Bti preparations
2021
In the Valencian Autonomous Region, eastern Spain, for approximately 20 years, there has been a constant increase in populations of Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae). This observation has been evidenced mainly by the medical reports from health centers and hospitals. Due to the inconvenience and damage caused by this insect to the human being, one of the municipalities most affected by the simuliids was chosen, to verify the effectiveness of Bti preparations on immature black fly states. In this article, the results of this scientific experience are presented and its high efficiency in the control of the immature populations of this harmful arthropod is corroborated.
Mosquito Magnet ® traps as a potential means of monitoring blackflies of medical and veterinary importance
2021
Mosquito Magnet® traps, deployed in widespread parts of England as part of nationwide mosquito surveillance projects, also caught blackflies. As many as 1242 blackflies were caught in a trapping session lasting 4 days. Principal among the species caught were Simulium equinum, Simulium lineatum and Simulium ornatum s.l. As S. ornatum s.l. is a vector that transmits Onchocerca linealis to cattle and S. equinum is responsible for dermatitis ('sweet itch') in cattle and horses, it is suggested that Mosquito Magnet® traps could be used to monitor and partially control these pests, as well as nuisance anthropophilic blackflies such as Simulium posticatum that can cause simuliidosis in southern En…
Mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel gene associated with deltamethrin resistance in commercially sourced Phytoseiulus persimilis
2020
The implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in current agricultural practice is a convenient and very effective strategy to maintain pest populations under control. The use of Biological Control Agents, like Phytoseiulus persimilis, is key for the success of such approach. This predatory mite is widely used since it is very effective for controlling the two spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae), one of the most devastating pests worldwide. Here we show the identification of mutations located in the Voltage Gated Sodium Channel (VGSC) of P. persimilis, that correlate with the reduced susceptibility to deltamethrin observed in commercially sourced colonies of this predatory mit…
